Darwin/Red Stringybark
Darwin Stringybark (or Red Stringybark) is an exceptionally durable timber sourced and milled in collaboration with the local Indigenous peoples in Far North Queensland. The timber is sourced sustainably while providing local indigenous people employment, training, and professional mentorship.
The timber’s durability is forged from its harsh natural growing environment. It boasts a rating of 1 for above and below-ground use and is resistant to termites (average density – 1170-kg/m³).
With very little feature, Red Stringybark can be produced at longer lengths than many other timbers. It offers good impact resistance, surpassing almost all other Australian and imported timber species.
This strong and attractive timber option is available in decking, flooring and cladding profiles, and skip-dressed timber for furniture and joinery.
White Stringybark & Silvertop Blend
White Stringybark
White Stringybark is an Australian hardwood timber that grows in the tablelands of southern NSW and in eastern Victoria. It can be any of the many Eucalyptus species with thick and fibrous bark.
White Stringybark is a warm nut brown colour that includes a range of natural characteristics and insect trails. It is a great alternative to Blackbutt and boasts a medium to fine texture. The grain is predominantly straight but occasionally interlocked and can also display gum veins.
This unique timber option is ideal for decking in undercover alfresco areas and accepts stains well. A non-tired oil will really highlight the beautiful natural timber colours on this incredible Australian hardwood. With a hardness rating of 8.5, White Stringybark is a perfect choice for residential and commercial applications.
Silvertop
Silvertop is named for the grey, fibrous bark extending to the species’ upper limbs, which by contrast, are whitish and smooth – can attain heights of up to 40 metres. It occurs natively on the coastal fall of tablelands, mainly in northern New South Wales.
The heartwood of this species is a pale brown colour, sometimes with pinkish hues. Its sapwood, up to 50 millimetres in width, is visually indistinct from the true wood. The grain of Silvertop is typically close and straight, with a medium and even texture, relatively free of gum veins.
Silvertop is a hard timber (rated 2 on a 6-class scale) in relation to both indentation and working with hand tools. It is readily worked by machine and amenable to standard fittings and fastenings.
Regarding durability, Silvertop is rated as a Class Three Hardwood, with an above-ground life expectancy of between seven and 15 years and an in-ground life expectancy of between five and 15 years (depending on installation, site conditions and exposure levels). Sapwood of the species is not susceptible to lyctid borer (powder post beetle) attack and is readily impregnated with commercially available preservatives.
